Dr Willem Van Leeuwe

Psychiatrist

My name is Willem van Leeuwe

I’m a psychiatrist specialised in working with children and their families and I also work for grown up children; adults.

The name of my private practice “Lionistic psychiatry” is a reference to the strength clients show working on their mental well being. It’s also a reference to my family name (van Leeuwe) which translates as: “from lions”. If your mental health is under stress it takes courage to look at yourself and look into what can be done to change your well-being for the better. My profession is to help children, parents and grown-ups in doing that when needed. Often with a special focus on if and how medication can play a role in that process. And often working alongside a therapist, such as a psychologist to get there together.

Clients can seek help with anxiety, depression, mood dysregulation, psychosis , obsessive compulsive problems, autism spectrum associated difficulties, emotional dysregulation, trauma, eating disorders, ADHD. Or with identifying which diagnosis describes their Mental Health stressors best, in a way that is most helpful to them to improve your health. Often when mental health comes under stress there is more than one factor to consider. And starts with an assessment looking at those factors. A good diagnosis describes what the Mental health stressors are, how they came about and how they can be approached best.

A bit about my background:

I have been educated as an adult psychiatrist and a child and adolescent psychiatrist in the Netherlands. Achieved my Medical degree at Amsterdam university in 1994, then specialised in  psychiatry and child-psychiatry at Utrecht university. Started working as a senior medical officer at Amsterdam University Hospital  in 2001. I  migrated to Sweden in 2010, To live with my Swedish partner whom I met in Hawaii. I learned to speak Swedish and worked as consultant psychiatrist in Göteborg and Stockholm. It is a wonderful country but really too cold to surf 😉. As we both love the outdoors and she considered New Zealand the second best country in the world after Sweden we moved here.  We both love New Zealand for it’s lifestyle and it’s special culture and unique mixture of people. We have a small Kiwi who is 5 years old. I have been employed as SMO in the New Zealand Public system working for District Health Boards since 2015. And have recently started a private practice.
